On December 4, New York’s city Department of Education posted an internal rule for members of the United Federation of Teachers which warning that anyone in school refusing to be tested for COVID-19 will be put on leave and taken off the payroll.

The rule, obtained by the New York Post, reportedly said, “UFT members who don’t consent to testing within one week of returning to their buildings will be placed on leave without pay.” Additionally, in reference to non-UFT school workers, it said, “Guidance regarding other staff members who do not consent will be forthcoming.”

The DOE stated that staffers will not be allowed to submit COVID-19 test results from a private doctor or other health care provider. Mayor Bill De Blasio also ordered random weekly in-school testing of 20 per cent of staff and students. Previously, the testing was conducted monthly for 10 to 20 per cent. New York Post has further details.
