[Nigeria] Payment of new minimum wage begins in Ogun

Workers in Ogun State were pleasantly surprised to discover that their October salary included the new minimum wage increase, following pessimism from some quarters about when higher payments might commence. The State Government reportedly had an agreement with the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) to effect the new minimum wage and that agreement has now been fulfilled.

Workers spoke to The Guardian to express their happiness over receiving the minimum wage, saying it was a welcome development. Commander Oluwafemi Odukalu of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) said, “To be honest, I was expecting something close to that increment, but when I saw the actual amount added, I was overwhelmed because I didn’t expect that much.” Commander Odukalu went on to thank the Governor for fulfilling the promise.
