[Nigeria] Salary and promotion arrears in Kwara
14 Oct 2020

On October 6, 2020, a blog based in Kwara published a screenshot of its prior reporting on a protest from May 20, 2019, together with video footage of pensioners and players demonstrating at Kwara United FC. The footage captures protesters saying their salaries had not been paid since 2013. The same blog went on to report that the new administration has commenced paying these salary arrears and sign-on fees to players and officials of the club.

Such backlogs of salary, pensions and gratuities are reportedly not limited to the football club. It is a rule, not an exception, across several MDAs in the state. In the local government system alone N21bn is owed to pensioners while pay arrears in the LG system for active workers exceeds N6bn. Across the state MDAs, thousands of workers are owed outstanding promotion arrears. Thousands of workers were promoted to higher grade levels without commensurate pay. The Guardian Nigeria News further examines the story and the impact the new minimum wage might have.
