[Tunisia] Mandatory quarantine for expats at an end

Tunisia has announced an end to the mandatory quarantine, in hotels at their own expense, for Tunisians returning from abroad, Asharq Al-Awsat reports.

According to AFP reporting, the country will instead request negative COVID-19 test results proving that travellers are virus-free. Tunisia’s land sea and air borders will open on June 27.

In a statement, the premiership announced that from June 18, repatriated Tunisians are required to submit their negative result from the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) diagnostic test for COVID-19.

These tests will be taken into account if they were conducted no more than three days after arriving in the Tunisian borders. Returnees must also undergo a 14-day self-quarantine.

AFP reporting says quarantine has been mandatory in Tunisia; returnees have been obliged to stay in hotels for a 7 day period, followed by a self-quarantine for an additional seven days.

After the June 27 reopening, Tunisia will allow all travellers who can provide negative COVID-19 test results to enter its territory. It will also check the temperature of all tourists arriving at its airport.

Tourists groups will be transferred to the hotel on tourist buses and then committed to the rules of the health protocol for Tunisian tourism, the statement said.

Hotels must also enforce the rules of social distancing, which stipulate individual meals to be served rather than a buffet, a safe distance maintained between tables and chairs and three square meters distance between people using swimming pools.

Tourists will be permitted to visit museums, monuments and tour archaeological sites if they respect the health protocols of each site and take the PCR test before returning to their home countries.

Tunisia closed its borders in mid-March to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus. The country reported just 49 deaths and has few new cases per day, most are subjected to quarantine upon their repatriation.
