[Chile] Man paid 286 times his salary resigns and vanishes
01 Jul 2022

An employee in Chile was accidentally paid 286 times his salary for the month of May and responded by quitting his job and disappearing, Business Standard reports.

The man received around 165,398,851 Chilean pesos (£148,000) in error. When the incident came to light, he acknowledged the fault on the part of his organisation and agreed to return the amount that was paid to him in excess.

However, he then resigned and vanished with all the money.

According to reporting, the employee worked at Consorcio Industrial de Alimentos or Cial; one of the largest producers of cold cuts in Chile. The company was supposed to pay the employee a total of 500,000 pesos (around £450) - his usual monthly salary - but accidentally ended up paying him 165,398,851 pesos instead. The incident came to light when management checked their records and spotted the error.

Soon after the incident, management at Cial reached out to the employee, who allegedly agreed to visit the bank to arrange to have the overpayment refunded. When Cial did not receive the funds they reportedly tried to contact the man for an update but had no success.

The employee reached out days later claiming he would visit the bank soon to return the money. On June 2 he submitted his resignation.

Several reports have now surfaced confirming that the man has disappeared. The company has now reached out to various agencies and registered a complaint against the employee, in the hope of retrieving their missing money.
