[Montana] Hourly minimum wage will increase to $8.75 in 2021
13 Oct 2020

Governor Steve Bullock has announced Montana’s hourly minimum wage will increase to $8.75 from January 1, 2021. In 2006, when he was a private citizen, Mr Bullock led ballot initiative I-156 to raise the minimum wage and require an annual adjustment for inflation. Montana Code Annotated 39-3-409 has been approved by Montana voters, it requires the Montana Department of Labor & Industry to use the Consumer Price Index for Urban Consumers (CPI-U) to adjust the Montana minimum wage for inflation.

It is reportedly estimated that 8,000 to 10,000 Montana workers (2 per cent of the workforce) received hourly wages below $8.75 in 2020 and will benefit from higher wages after the 2021 increase. In 2019, the accommodations and food services industry had the largest number of workers earning the minimum wage. A significant number of minimum-wage earners are front-line workers with the greatest risk of exposure to COVID-19. Bitterroot Star has further details and a statement from the Governor.
