[Germany] Increasing number of workers using mental health services
28 Feb 2023

An increasing number of workers in Germany are using mental health rehabilitation services to help manage stress, anxiety and depression. The figure has almost doubled in the last 20 years, IamExpat reports.

In 2002, 9.7 per cent of work-approved rehabilitations in the country were due to mental illness. By 2022, this number had increased to 18.8 per cent, according to the Deutsche Rentenversicherung (German public pension insurance system).

The report reveals that 20 years ago, 92,000 rehab facilities were approved to support patients with mental health problems rather than those with addictions. Today this number has reportedly leapt up to 171,000 in order to meet demand.

The reasons workers are seeking rehabilitation treatment

According to the Deutsche Rentenversicherung, the majority of patients at rehabilitation centres in Germany - both women and men - are seeking help for depression and anxiety. The average age of service users is 50.

A spokesperson from the Deutsche Rentenversicherung told RND that in 82 per cent of cases where people have had rehabilitation for mental health issues, they have returned to their jobs afterwards. 18 per cent of patients reportedly receive a reduced earning capacity pension two years after they have received the initial treatment.
