Moldovan citizens working in Italy can apply for old-age pension, disability pension and other social guarantees following government approval of the ratification of the agreement between Moldova and Italy on social security signed in Rome on October 31.
The document offers citizens two basic benefits: a combination of contribution periods for establishing pension eligibility and a simplified benefits application process.
This will reportedly allow Moldovan citizens who have worked in both countries to cumulate work periods to qualify for a pension. As a result, Moldovans with at least 15 years of total contributions in both countries will be eligible for a pension in the Republic of Moldova.
The process will also become more accessible and less costly for Moldovan citizens entitled to Italian pensions residing in the Republic of Moldova, the government said, as they will no longer have to travel to Italy to apply. Applications for pensions and other social benefits can be submitted both in Italy and in the Republic of Moldova.
Under the Agreement, citizens will be entitled to the following social benefits:
- old-age pension
- disability pension
- pension and allowance for accidents at work
- or occupational diseases, survivors' pensions
The Republic of Moldova has reportedly concluded 18 bilateral social security agreements. Similar agreements are currently being negotiated with France, Canada, Slovakia, Slovenia, Cyprus, Albania and Ukraine.
