03 Jan 2025

The Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona has announced an 8.5 per cent salary increase for its entire workforce across Spain and Portugal, ESM reports.

The initiative will also see the company's base staff paid  €1,685 gross per month - 27 per cent more than the minimum interprofessional wage - in their first year and 72 per cent more after completing four years in the company.

The pay hike will be effective from the January 2025 payroll and will impact the more than 100,000 workers the company employs in Spain and Portugal. The percentage increase is reportedly the sum of the corresponding Consumer Price Index (CPI) of each country and an additional extra determined by the company until it reaches the target of 8.5 per cent.

The company's base staff will receive €1,685 gross per month in their first year, which is 27 per cent more than the Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI), and €2,280 gross/month once they have completed four years in the company.

As part of its profit-sharing strategy, Mercadona's management committee has also decided to distribute an additional premium that will be added to the traditional performance bonus. It stated that this action was taken to reward the effort made by workers and share the benefits of the company.

As in previous years, in March - from their first year onwards - workers who achieve the goals and objectives agreed at the beginning of the year, will receive an extra monthly payment on their payroll. An amount that will rise to two monthly payments after they exceed four years of seniority.

Additionally, Mercadona announced that workers will receive an extra bonus corresponding to a monthly payment in 2025.
