[UK] Privatised health staff demand to be returned to NHS payroll

On June 18, privatised health staff staged a rally at the Yorkshire hospital where they work, demanding to be taken back onto the NHS payroll and given pay parity, Morning Star reports.

Members of UK general union GMB working at Calderdale Royal Infirmary in Halifax are reportedly campaigning to have their jobs with private healthcare provider ISS transferred back to direct NHS employment.

The caterers, cleaners, porters, reception and security staff say they are being paid below even the rate that privatised workers at neighbouring hospitals are receiving.

GMB local organiser Joe Wheatley said, “The position of both ISS and Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust should invite public condemnation.

“Together they have set the lower standard in their sector and subjected a group of dedicated hospital workers to the degradation of poor pay.

“These are NHS workers, they should be paid NHS wages - anything less is a slap in the face to people who formed the front line of our fight against Covid.”

Morning Star contacted Calderdale Royal Infirmary for comment.
