[UK] Sainsbury’s increases staff salaries and gives frontline worker bonus
10 Mar 2021

Leading supermarket chain Sainsbury's has said it will increase staff salaries at its supermarkets and Argos stores and pay a bonus to frontline workers, the third since the pandemic started. LBC reports on the pay hike.

Staff at Sainsbury's currently receive £9.30 per hour and Argos workers receive £9 but from March this will go up to £9.50. The hourly pay for staff at central London stores will rise to £10.10.

Additionally, a one-off 3 per cent annual bonus will be paid to staff, meaning a full-time worker will take home an extra £530.

The announcement follows an announcement from Lidl of a £200 bonus for its 23,000 UK workers. Aldi has said its staff wages will rise to a minimum of £9.55 an hour and Morrisons store workers will take home at least £10 an hour from April.

Supermarkets have been among the biggest success stories during the COVID-19 pandemic, remaining open throughout and enjoying consistently strong sales while non-essential retailers, pubs, cafes and restaurants have been forced to remain shut.

This new pay rise from Sainsbury's means its workers have seen their salaries increase 24 per cent over the last five years.

The latest bonus is the third since the pandemic began. It brings up the total of extra cash the company has given to workers to more than £100 million.
