[UK] Sainsbury’s payroll affected by Kronos ransomware attack
20 Dec 2021

Supermarket giant Sainsbury's is the latest retailer to acknowledge that it has been affected by a cyber-attack on payroll system provider Kronos, The Mirror reports.

On December 11, US tech company Kronos confirmed that there had been a ransomware attack on its computer systems and it was dealing with the fallout.

Worldwide companies such as Sainsbury’s rely on Kronos to log, store and process employees’ working hours on their systems to calculate their monthly pay.

It is understood that Sainsbury’s has lost a week's worth of data for its 150,000 UK employees, however, the retailer has insisted that staff will be paid before Christmas.

A number of departments, including payroll, HR and accounting are reportedly now using historical data and working patterns to make sure employees are paid the correct amount on time; many employees will have accrued overtime hours in the run-up to Christmas Day.

A Sainsbury's spokesperson said, "We're in close contact with Kronos while they investigate a systems issue.

"In the meantime, we have contingencies in place to make sure our colleagues continue to receive their pay."
