[Australia] Increase in weekly payroll jobs for October
21 Nov 2023

In Australia, Single Touch Payroll (STP) data has revealed that in the month to October 14, 2023, payroll jobs increased by 0.2 per cent, compared to an increase of 0.1 per cent in the previous month, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reports.

Estimates of change were calculated using unrounded index values. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) says they may be different from, but are more accurate than, movements obtained from the rounded index values.

In the month to October 14, 2023, the largest changes in payroll jobs were:

  • Tasmania, up 0.5 per cent
  • Queensland, up 0.3 per cent

In mid-October 2023, the proportion of jobholders with unknown sex reportedly rose to 7.5 per cent. These jobholders are not evenly distributed, therefore this proportion differs across detailed indexes which include sex, and can affect comparisons over time. Indexes of persons aged 15-19 years old by sex are particularly impacted by rising proportions of unknown sex.

The historical Methods review section on ABS’s Update of jobholder characteristics offers further information.

The increasingly high proportion of unknown sex reportedly resulted in the withdrawal of indexes of persons aged 15-19 years old by sex in the release of May 11, 2023.

In the month to 14 October 2023, the largest changes in payroll jobs were:

  • worked by males, down 0.3 per cent
  • worked by persons aged 70 and over, up 3.8 per cent

In the month to 14 October 2023, the largest changes in payroll jobs were:

  • Public administration and safety, up 7.0 per cent
  • Education and training, down 1.2 per cent
