A Bangladesh Bank circular released on July 27 states that Bangladeshi expatriates do not need a copy of embassy documents or attestation to open a commercial bank account at home, The Business Standard reports.

Bangladeshi nationals staying abroad reportedly have to submit several documents from Bangladesh missions abroad to open a bank account at home.

However the circular - which was sent to the managing directors and chief executives of all banks - said the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit did not mandate any such paper submission.

The circular also states that Machine Readable Passports (MRP) and Electronic Passports (ePassports) are issued after a specific verification process. Therefore, scheduled banks operating in Bangladesh do not require separate embassy attestation from expatriates attempting to open bank accounts.

The central bank said the terms of the circular will be effective immediately.
