[Indonesia] Unions threaten strike over proposed labour reforms
02 Oct 2020

On September 28, Indonesian trade unions threatened to stage a national strike following the agreement by a parliamentary committee to move ahead with proposed labour reforms in President Joko Widodo’s controversial “Job Creation” bill. Global investors are reportedly keeping a close watch on the bill to ensure its terms have not been diluted in parliamentary debates, as Southeast Asia’s largest economy competes to win manufacturing investment relocating from China.

Meetings were held at the weekend by lawmakers in the legislation committee to finish debating the bill in order that it could be passed before parliament’s recess on October 9. Trade unions were preparing to hold rallies this week together with a proposed national strike on October 6-8, ahead of the vote, involving five million workers to demand that proposed labour reforms be dropped, a union leader said. Several smaller rallies to protest the bill have already been held by unions and green groups. Reuters reports the full story.
