[Global] Elon Musk slashes parental leave for Twitter employees
03 May 2023

Twitter's embattled CEO Elon Musk has rolled out a new change to the microblogging platform's parental leave policy. He has slashed parental leave entitlement for employees from 20 weeks down to just 14 days, Business Standard reports.

The change was confirmed in internal documents reviewed by New York Times.

The remaining two weeks of paid leave will reportedly be topped up to meet the minimum requirements of the specific region where employees work. This means that in most states where paid leave is not required by law, new mothers and fathers would receive a maximum of just two weeks off.

The move was greeted by strong criticism from multiple observers, including a nonprofit group advocating for paid leave, former employees and Twitter users.

Dawn Huckelbridge - founding director of Paid Leave for All - told The Daily Mail, "Paid leave is a proven boost to business and bottom lines, and a lifeline to working families. But this decision is more proof that we can't rely on the private sector to ever solve this problem - we need a federal program to guarantee paid leave for all working people."

Since Mr Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion in 2022, he has fired half of the social media company’s existing employees and implemented several controversial new rules as cost-cutting measures.
