[Global] Tech workers would accept lower salaries for a less toxic work culture

A new survey has revealed that tech workers are willing to accept lower salaries and even take pay cuts to work for a company without a toxic work culture, India Today reports.

For the last few months, the global tech job market has been in a state of upheaval. Big-name companies including Meta, Microsoft, Google, Twitter and Amazon have laid thousands of employees off, impacting the lives of workers around the world.

A survey by the job posting site Blind shows that job-seekers are influenced by current market conditions when accepting an offer; some respondents said that they would accept a job with a lower or equal salary as a result.

"This finding underlines the significant influence of current job market conditions on salary expectations, with 45 per cent of respondents citing this as the primary reason they would accept a comparable or lower salary for a new position," the survey states.

Market conditions are not the only contributing factor; employees currently working in the tech sector reportedly want more than just a high-paying job. 56 per cent of tech workers said that they are “open to accepting the same or lower pay in a new role, provided the role fulfils another unmet need”.

"Engineers are lowering their salary expectations, but there is a newly heightened emphasis on non-monetary benefits, like career growth, work-life balance, and company culture," a Blind blog post reads.

In addition, the blog post quotes a Meta employee, who wrote, "I’d rather make less money and be happier."

Another tech worker - a Salesforce employee quoted in the reports - said that they would work at a lower salary if the work culture is non-toxic. "I would trade toxicity for a lower paycheck," the employee said.

Another Meta employee reportedly stated that companies offering higher compensation are in 'layoff mode' and described their work culture as a 'dumpster fire'.

Meta employees have reportedly spoken out on the toxicity of tech before. In May a former Meta employee shared her layoff experience on LinkedIn, revealing that she had started working at a local winery after Meta let her go.

The employee revealed that her new job pays around $20 an hour; she was earning a 6-figure salary at Meta.

Commenting on the state of the job market and the toxicity of tech, she wrote, "This tech job market is scary. I was let go in March from my role at Meta, and to be honest, I gave up on finding another talent acquisition job in the tech sector before I even started. Tech feels like a toxic and volatile place right now."
