Laurent Botella: Every cloud has a silver lining at Workday
16 May 2017

Workday’s director of strategy, Laurent Botella, talks about his role, advising global customers on their global HCM/payroll strategy and learning their global needs and requirements.

Give me a bit of background on how you came to be at Workday?

I am responsible for setting the strategic direction for Workday’s human capital management and time solutions. Prior to joining Workday, I spent four years in the HR outsourcing space at Fidelity Investments and Infosys BPO where I led the strategy, alliance and development of the global HR/ payroll outsourcing solution. Before Fidelity, I spent 12 years at Oracle where I was responsible for the strategy of the global payroll, time and workforce scheduling products.

Can you give us a sneak preview of any developments with Workday?

Customers are really excited about Workday Payroll for the UK, because it is a modern, cloud-based payroll solution designed to address the full spectrum of enterprise payroll needs including PAYE taxes, RTI and National Insurance requirements.

I hear that you have some high profile clients and partners, are you allowed to say more?

The Workday website includes the list of all the Workday customers that have granted us permission to list their names on our website, as well as numerous case studies. These include Chiquita, CareFusion, Flextronics and Tripadvisor. Workday Global Payroll Cloud partners include activpayroll, ADP, Aon Hewitt, CDP Group, Cegedim SRH, Celergo, CloudPay, i-admin, Intelligo, Kayang, NorthgateArinso, Safeguard, Soreco and Take5People.

Why did you want to join Workday?

Workday is one of the few places in the enterprise software industry right now where the game is really changing in terms of innovation and customer experience. I was excited to join Workday for the pace of innovation, customer focus and company culture which is unique in the enterprise software industry.

How do you manage your international work load?

I have a strong network of Workday colleagues, partners and customers across all regions that I leverage to stay in touch with all the trends, competitive information and market demands.

I specifically work closely with Workday global customers, advise them on their global HCM/ payroll strategy and learn their global needs and requirements. These requirements are included in the process to define the Workday global payroll product roadmap, which includes two areas:

• Workday Cloud Connect for Third Party Payroll - enables organisations to connect to any number of third-party payroll applications, including global payroll providers.
• Workday Payroll (USA and Canada are available today with UK and France in development).

What challenges do you face when working on global outsourcing projects?

We don’t face any direct challenge on global outsourcing projects as Workday is focused on technology and we have multiple partners that offer global outsourcing services on the Workday platform to our customers. We can define two different categories of global outsourcing services:

The first is global payroll outsourcing services on third party solutions. Workday Global Payroll Cloud is our global payroll partner programme that helps reduce the costs associated with deploying, integrating and managing third-party payroll solutions. Workday’s approach to multi-country or global payroll is to offer customers more choice when it comes to selecting and integrating with third-party providers around the world.

The second is payroll outsourcing services on the Workday Payroll platform. Payroll outsourcing services enable Workday customers to outsource payroll administration, payroll processing, and other non-strategic or non-scalable payroll tasks to Workday partners. Workday has a close relationship with these partners and our common global customers and we include their feedback on global processes and requirements when we define our product roadmap.

My observations of the global outsourcing space is the following: global customers are moving away from ‘lift and shift’ outsourcing solutions, and are favouring modern global HCM/Payroll outsourcing platforms that are based on true cloud platforms such as Workday.

Tell us about your team and the global challenges that you face managing them.

People who manage teams globally have to address many challenges when it comes to global payroll. They have to deal with fragmented global payroll solutions, based on disparate systems in multiple countries due typically to various M&A over the years.

There is often a lack of standardisation and data quality concerns, leading to cumbersome reporting and compliance concerns. Considerations can include: compliance risks in some geographies, poor visibility into labour cost due to disconnected HR/payroll systems and a need for cost efficiencies.

To address these challenges Workday offers certified integrations with leading global payroll partners offering options for over 100 countries around the world. Workday’s certified integrations are fully documented, supported by our partners, and rigorously tested.

The benefits of this approach are:

• Customers can get multi-country payroll in the cloud

• More choice and flexibility in the area of global payroll to use different vendor

• Workday’s certified integrations support a rich range of features including employee and organisational data, as well as business events. A core principle of the programme is that Workday serves as the system-of-record for demographic, organisational and business data. Data held in Workday is propagated to the payroll partner over the certified integration

• Lower setup and maintenance costs by easing the burden of integration, which is a big cost factor with hidden complexity. As integrations are maintained by Workday’s partners and certified as interoperable with Workday, customers no longer have to worry about keeping integrations up to date

• Bi-Directional Payroll Interface will allow companies to aggregate global payroll data into Workday HCM for global visibility into payroll actuals around the world

• Greater central control, minimising compliance risk
