[Global] Amazon removes remotely supervised ‘Just Walk Out’ grocery checkouts
04 Apr 2024

Amazon has announced that it is phasing out the “Just Walk Out” technology supported by workers in India at its checkout-free grocery stores, Gizmondo reports.

On April 2, The Information reported that Amazon’s senior vice president of grocery stores had confirmed that the retail giant was moving away from Just Walk Out; in-store tech that depended on cameras, sensors and remote workers to track which products customers were leaving stores with.

More than half of Amazon Fresh stores reportedly use Just Walk Out. The technology lets customers avoid checkouts by scanning a QR code when they enter the store.

While Just Walk Out appeared to be completely automated, it actually relied on more than 1,000 workers in India reviewing and labelling videos to ensure accurate checkouts. Cashiers were effectively moved off-site to watch shoppers rather than replaced.

On April 3, GeekWire reported on internal emails revealing that Amazon Web Services is cutting a few hundred jobs from its Physical Stores Technology team. The layoffs will allegedly impact portions of Amazon’s identity and checkout teams.

Amazon is moving towards Dash Carts - shopping trolleys with embedded scanners and screens allowing customers to checkout as they shop - to replace Just Walk Out. The carts reportedly offer a more reliable solution. In addition, Amazon Fresh stores will now feature self-checkout counters, for shoppers who aren’t Amazon members.

An Amazon spokesperson told Gizmodo, “We’re rolling out Amazon Dash Cart, our smart-shopping carts”. Amazon confirmed the feature will replace Just Walk Out technology in existing stores.
