28 Mar 2019

Governor Obiano remains committed to keeping his promise to be the first governor to pay the new N30,000 minimum wage, Legit.ng reports.

These are the words of Harry Udu - the Anambra state head of service - reassuring that the governor is working towards his goal. Mr Udu says the governor has asked for strengthening of the Internally Generated Revenue in the state, to support the wage increase.

Mr Udu, speaking to state reporters, said, "Governor Willie Obiano has ordered the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) agencies to redouble efforts in raising extra N1.4 billion that will ensure that the promise is kept. Obiano’s pledge in his address to civil servants during the electioneering period to be the first to pay the wage once approved is not a political statement. He remains committed to fulfilling the promise of being the first governor to pay the new wage once approved."

He announced that the governor is taking steps to ensure that the workers’ salaries continue to be paid on the 25th of every month after the new minimum wage. Is introduced “The government is focused on making arrangements to move to the new minimum wage without having challenges in the legacy of the governor. Efforts are on to get additional revenue to sustain the practice of workers receiving salaries on 25th of every month,” Mr Udu said.

Legit.ng previously reported on the Nigerian Senate’s mid-March approval of the N30,000 minimum wage. After Nigerian workers had campaigned hard for it. The minimum wage was passed by the Senate after it considered the report of an ad hoc committee, created to explore the prospect. The Senate then asked for a supplementary budget from the federal government to support the new wage structure.
