Large scale fraud has been uncovered in the Niger civil service as 11,000 civil servants were revealed to be ghost workers. N672m was recovered in the form of salaries paid out to the fictitious employees. A further undisclosed sum - totalling multiple millions of Naira - was paid to other ghost workers under the fraud.
Engr. Ibrahim Panti - the State Chairman Salary Management Committee and Commissioner for Works and Infrastructural Development - reportedly revealed the discovery during his appearance on State Radio Station “Feedback” in Minna at the weekend. He said it had become necessary to screen all categories of workers in the state because the government can no longer sustain bogus monthly wages being paid by the state government. Vanguard details the Commissioner’s disclosure.
