Justice Iyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja division, has ordered that the Benue State government’s salary accounts be unfrozen following earlier action taken over its inability to pay workers’ salaries, Nairametrics reports.
On October 26, the court made an interim order, freezing all bank accounts of the Benue State government domiciled in some Nigerian banks after it was unable to pay back the N333 million loan it borrowed in 2008.
The judge granted the relief sought by the state government who pleaded that the interim order of the court left it unable to pay its workers their salaries. The salary accounts to be unfrozen are at Fidelity Bank Plc, United Bank for Africa (UBA) and Access Bank Plc.
Justice Ekwo stated that the order must be complied with within 14 days after which another order will be made to refreeze the accounts if parties fail to resolve the matter.
The judge made the order on November 5 following an application for the release of salary accounts and verifying affidavit by Terkura Pepe (SAN), counsel to the state government.
The judge who granted the relief directed the state government to engage AMCON with a view to resolving the matter and adjourned until November 22.
In addition, the court reportedly discharged some commercial banks from the proceeding following their compliance with its instructions.
