[Nigeria] Ghost employees including 13-year-old found on Kano state payroll

In Nigeria, the Kano State Government has uncovered 3,234 ghost workers, including a 13-year-old female student, receiving a salary in the state, Foxiz News Network reports.

Among the ineligible workers were primary and secondary school students and members of the National Youth Service Corp.

Dr Abdullahi Bichi disclosed the information to waiting journalists following a meeting of the committee set up by the government to investigate illegal recruitment.

Abba Yusuf - the state governor - reportedly ordered an immediate halt to the salaries of 10,000 civil servants recruited towards the end of Mr Ganduje’s government.

The governor stated that his predecessor had failed to consider the financial implications of the 2023 appropriation despite the rushed employment exercise.

“It is sad to discover that the majority of those recruited did not go through the former screening exercise, while some got the job with fake certificates,” he said.

“Those that will be sanctioned include the mother of the 13-year-old girl who confirmed to the committee that she has been receiving salaries through her mother’s account and who is a worker in the public service,” Dr Bichi said.
