[California] San Francisco will require city workers to be vaccinated
30 Jun 2021

The City of San Francisco will require all workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19 within 10 weeks of the Food and Drug Administration’s final vaccine approval, WorkCompCentral reports.

San Francisco will be the first major city to require vaccination for all of its 37,000 employees, according to a report by USA Today. The new policy requires city workers to report their vaccination status to the city by July 29 as a condition of employment.

The policy is reportedly intended both to protect city workers and to save taxpayers money.

Carol Isen - human resources director for the city and County of San Francisco - said, “Workers’ compensation claims for San Francisco employees who are exposed to the virus at work and cannot work because they are sick with COVID-19 have already cost San Francisco close to $3 million.” (Quote via USA Today)

The California Workers’ Compensation Institute (CWCI) records 1,812 COVID-19 claims reported from San Francisco County between January 2020 and May 2021. This equates to around 35 claims for every 10,000 employees.

Public safety and government workers are said to have accounted for 469 of those claims, followed by health care workers with 356 and food service workers with 160.

CWCI reports that 146,454 statewide COVID-19 claims had been filed by May.
