The US Department of Labor and Industry (L&I) has announced that 21 Wendy's fast food chain restaurants are being fined for violating child labour laws in Pennsylvania, NBC Philadelphia reports.
GCWen Management - operator of the 21 Wendy's locations - faces 766 violations at restaurants in Bucks, Montgomery and Chester counties in 2023.
L&I's Bureau of Labor Law Compliance reportedly opened an investigation into the Wendy's locations in Pennsylvania following a tip about injuries received by working children.
The management company will need to pay $300,000 in fines for violating the labour laws, according to L&I. The violations range from failing to give underaged workers adequate breaks to the number of hours employees were scheduled to work in a given week.
Child labour law violations included:
- 432 violations of failure to provide breaks that included 81 children.
- 18 violations of not securing a work permit to hire a child (involving 19 children).
- 98 violations of failure to announce employment or employment change to the child's school that involved 98 children.
- 10 violations of failing to receive permission from the child's parents (involving 10 children).
- 208 violations of excessive hours worked in a given week that involved 34 children.
The GCWen management team members at all of the affected Wendy's locations are reportedly required to participate in training provided by L&I as part of the settlement agreement.
