[US] NLRB accuses Apple of further labour law violations
04 Oct 2024

The US National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has filed a complaint accusing Apple of violating union rights, Computerworld reports.

The NLRB filed the complaint in May and released it on September 30. In it, Apple is alleged to have committed several federal labour law violations, including “coercively interrogating employees about their union sympathies;” “confiscating union flyers from its employee break room,” and “interfering with, restraining, or coercing employees” from exercising their rights.

Apple has faced previous allegations from the US labour board claiming it was illegally trying to stop efforts to unionise. In 2021, the company was reportedly accused of interrogating workers and barring them from leaving pro-union flyers in a break room in a Manhattan store.

The most recent complaint results from a lawsuit filed in 2023 by a former Apple senior engineering manager who was “terminated” in 2021, Ashley Gjovik, and Cher Scarlett, who accused the company of banning employees from discussing wages and employment conditions.

Ms Scarlett reportedly agreed to leave Apple and drop her NLRB complaint. She was one of the founders of the #AppleToo movement, a whistleblower group alleging racism, sexism and inequality at the tech giant.
