Figures from the Tax Agency reveal that 135,653 workers in the Balearics in 2020 received salaries that equated to no more than €475 a month for fourteen payments, Majorca Daily Bulletin reports.

The numbers represent almost 30 per cent of workers last year. Their annual salaries failed to exceed 50 per cent of the minimum wage, which in 2020 was €13,300 per year or fourteen payments of €950.

The COVID-19 pandemic influenced this low level of pay and the number of employees who received it; 55 per cent more than in 2019, when the number of people registered with social security was reportedly its highest ever.

With the 2020 tourism season devastated by the global pandemic, many workers were left unable to secure any employment contract. There were many others who were placed on ERTE furlough. In May, around 150,000 workers in the Balearics were on ERTE. The percentage in the Balearics, similar to that of the Canaries, was the highest in Spain.

229,873 - a figure that represents nearly half the workers in the Balearics - did not earn more than the minimum wage.
