On August 31 Cyprus trade unions warned that they would fight back against attempts from employers to cut salaries or dilute work-related benefits when the government’s special support schemes for Covid-19 run out. Their warning followed a meeting between the ministers of labour and finance and the SEK, PEO and Deok syndicates.
The meeting was intended to consider the potential labour market situation after October when the special relief schemes expire. Andreas Matsas - the head of SEK - reportedly took employers organisations to task for trying to reduce salaries and benefits under the “pretext” of avoiding letting staff go. Cyprus Mail reports on the unions’ comments and what led to them.
