On August 15, IG Metall - Germany's largest trade union - proposed negotiating for a move to a four-day week to help protect jobs from economic fallout from both the COVID-19 crisis and structural shifts in the automobile industry. IG Metall represents 2.3 million employees in the metalworking and electrical sectors.

The union believes that a four-day week could make it possible to keep industrial jobs. The fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic has reportedly put around 300,000 jobs in Germany's metal and electrical industry at risk. IG Metall regularly makes demands which establish benchmarks for wage negotiations in those industries and beyond. WKZO reports on the proposal with quotes from the union’s leader.
