[Hungary] Minimum wage agreement ready to be signed
10 Nov 2021

Representatives of the Hungarian government, employers, and employees are ready to sign an agreement on 2022 minimum wage rises, Hungary Today reports.

Sándor Bodó - state secretary at the innovation and technology ministry - shared the news on public television M1.

The monthly minimum wages for unskilled and skilled workers will increase to 200,000 forints (EUR 557) and 260,000 forints (EUR 724), respectively, on January 1. The 20 per cent rise would be “unprecedentedly high” for recent years, Bodó said.

The state secretary acknowledged difficulties in supply chains as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. He added that long-term agreements were therefore hard to strike but talks would continue “in the interest of predictability”.

The government will help employers implement the agreement by reducing employer contributions and the tax on small businesses and continuing the way local business taxes are collected in 2022, saving companies around 660-670 billion forints.

The state secretary said the minimum wage increase would put upward pressure on wages more generally, in addition to wage-related benefits.
