[Ireland] Adequate protections needed for people working from home

Trade unions have urged the Irish Government to review employment legislation to ensure that workers engaged in remote working or working from home will receive adequate protections. The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (Ictu) said employment rights must continue to be preserved when people are working outside the traditional workplace. Ictu also said that workers must not be made to bear any additional costs involved in working from home.

Ictu published a guide on July 27 laying out the advantages and challenges facing those working remotely or from home. At present Irish workers - unlike their counterparts in the UK or elsewhere in the EU - have no legal right to work flexibly. The Irish Times has further details of the guide and a breakdown of the main pressures facing remote and home workers from Ictu’s social policy officer.
