[Ireland] Significant changes to PUP after September 17
08 Sep 2020

September 17 is a key date for the more than 225,000 people still claiming the COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP). After this date, a significant number will see their welfare payments reduced if they have yet to return to work.

For those who were earning over €300 per week prior to the pandemic, the top PUP rate of €350 per week will drop to €300. A new middle rate of €250 will come into effect for those earning between €200 and €300 pre-COVID. The lower rate of €203 for those previously earning under €200 remains unchanged. RTÉ explores the implications of September 17 changes for employers and employees and what the government’s next moves may be.
