In the UK, Manchester United has imposed a ‘Cristiano Ronaldo rule’ to make sure that no first-team player’s weekly pay exceeds £200,000, talkSPORT reports.
Ronaldo (37) had his contract terminated by mutual consent in November. He was believed to be making £ 480,000 per week at Old Trafford.
In September it was reportedly revealed that Man Utd had set a Premier League record of the highest wage bill at £384millionfor the 2021/22 season.
But following Ronaldo’s departure, United is said to have put in place a salary cap to ensure that no one will be earning dramatically more than their teammates.
According to Daily Mail reporting, boss Erik ten Hag, director of football John Murtough and chief executive Richard Arnold want to avoid a culture of jealousy in the dressing room.
The new rule will reportedly have an immediate impact on goalkeeper David de Gea. His £375,000-a-week contract expires in the summer but United have the option to tie him down for a further year.
Mr de Gea is said to have been offered a ‘take it or leave it offer’ in the region of £180,000-£200,000 per week. The Spaniard recently revealed that he is in talks with United over a new deal as he insisted he wants to finish his career at the club.
Senior figures such as Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro are earning within the maximum bracket that United is prepared to hand out. While Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane are also taking home similar salaries.
United may, however, have a challenge in trying to persuade Marcus Rashford to agree to that salary, with Paris Saint-Germain prepared to offer him £850,000 a week, according to Bild reporting.
Reports in December claimed Rashford was closing in on a new £400,000-per-week deal at United but the player and activist branded this fake news.
