[UK] Use HMRC’s Digital Assistant
06 May 2020

An update was made on the 5th of May 2020 to HMRC’s webpage about taxable expenses when working from home.  This is a really good source of information for the employees / furloughed employees that are working from home at the moment.  It covers the following:

  • Mobile phones and SIM cards (where there is no restriction on private use)
  • Broadband (if the employee needs it for work and the cost is not covered by the employer)
  • Laptops, tablets, computers, and office supplies (used mainly for business)
  • Reimbursements for expenses of office equipment bought by the employee
  • Additional expenses (e.g. electricity, heating or broadband)
  • Employer provided loans
  • Temporary accommodation
  • Employees using their own vehicle for business

Whilst we have publicised this very relevant page before, the update on the 5th of May 2020 was more than about taxable and allowable expenses when working from home.  The update was publicising HMRC’s “digital assistant” that allows an individual to find more information about the coronavirus support schemes.  This is for employers and business owners as well.

At a time when it is more than ever necessary to contact HMRC, it is nice to have this tool available.  We really recommend its use.
