[Malaysia] Bangladeshi expats warned about passport misinformation
26 Aug 2021

The Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has warned Bangladeshi expatriates in Malaysia to remain vigilant about circulating misinformation regarding its passport related services, The Daily Star reports.

On August 22 the high commission said they have been delivering passports through 36 post offices since April 2021, in response to pandemic measures and limitations in Malaysia. It said it had delivered a record number of passports over the last six to seven months.

The decision to deliver the passport-related services to expat Bangladeshis' doorsteps was reportedly taken to mitigate the effects of the current COVID-19 situation in the country and avoid complications.

"Expatriate brothers and sisters are requested not to panic," the high commission said, urging people to avoid spreading any news that might create unnecessary panic among the expatriate Bangladeshis in Malaysia.

The high commission said over 2 lakh (200,000) passports were delivered in the last six to seven months and a large proportion of those were delivered by post offices. It said, "It's time to face the COVID-19 challenges together with a positive approach."

The Bangladesh mission confirmed that Bangladeshi expatriates in Malaysia are able to receive appointments online without any difficulty.

“They are getting passports in hand within the shortest possible time through nearby post offices after receiving an appointment,” the High Commission said, adding that this method saves time, cost and protects Bangladeshis from the risk of COVID-infection.

Despite long-term lockdown in Malaysia, the Bangladesh mission has kept passport services open for service seekers, it reassured.
