[Myanmar] Manufacturers move to counter worker wage demands
20 Feb 2020

Myanmar garment manufacturers have completed their own factory surveys in an attempt to stifle worker attempts to get a substantial increase to the country’s minimum wage. The minimum wage is reviewed on a biennial basis, Ecotextile News reports.

At the start of 2020, it was announced that Myanmar’s government would start to research the cost of labour in its key garment, food and commodity sectors for the first time, in order to make an informed decision about whether workers should be awarded a minimum wage increase.

When the announcement was made, Myanmar’s National Level Minimum Wage Committee said it would push for an increase from the current sum - the equivalent of US$3.30 - moving it closer to US$5.

In hope of influencing the government’s final assessment, manufacturers have taken it upon themselves to collect data from around 100 factories.
