[New Zealand] Best country in the world for work-life balance
19 Jul 2024

New research has revealed that New Zealand has struck the best work-life balance this year, thanks to its minimum wage and statutory leave offerings, Time Out reports.

Employment platform Remote’s second annual global life-work balance index considered factors such as minimum wage, sick leave, maternity leave, healthcare, public happiness and LGBTQ+ inclusivity across the world’s top 60 GDP countries to find the best-performing nations.

Each country was reportedly given a ‘work-life balance’ score out of 100, based on those factors. New Zealand took the number one spot for the second year running with a score of 80.76. Its high minimum wage offering and generous annual leave entitlement of 32 days were a big part of the win.

In second place was Ireland, reportedly climbing 19 places from its 2023 position following the introduction of statutory sick pay. In joint third place were Denmark and Belgium.

Germany - recently named the best European country for work-life balance for its well below-average working hours - only placed sixth.

Remote’s ten best countries in the world for work-life balance in 2024 were:

1. New Zealand
2. Ireland
3. Denmark and Belgium
5. Canada
6. Germany
7. Finland
8. Australia
