[New Zealand] Seasonal worker minimum wage will rise in April
22 Mar 2024

In New Zealand, the minimum wage for all Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) workers is set to rise on April 1, 2024, VisaGuide.World reports.

The wage threshold for such workers will also increase so that they match. At present, RSE workers are required to be paid an hourly wage of at least NZD$24.97.

However, from April, employers in this sector must reportedly ensure that their workers receive at least NZD$25.47 per hour; the minimum wage plus a ten per cent increase.

The New Zealand Government said, “RSE workers must be paid at the New Zealand minimum wage plus ten per cent. This means that from April 1, 2024, employers in this sector must pay workers NZD$25.47 per hour to ensure that RSE remuneration continues to increase in line with the minimum wage.”

All employers in New Zealand will be required to abide by the new minimum wage rules. The government cautioned that those who fail to update the minimum wage will be considered in breach of their Agreement to Recruit commitments.

In cases when a seasonal worker transfers from one employer to another, the government states that the new employer must also apply the increased minimum wage rules to them.

New Zealand is among the countries in need of seasonal, skilled and qualified workers in different sectors throughout the country. By introducing more favourable conditions, it reportedly aims to attract more workers and address any shortages that it could face.
