[EU] Macron wants European minimum wage as Brexit defence

The French President wants to see a single minimum wage for workers across the European Union and a guarantee of the same pay in the same workplace, The Telegraph reports.

Emmanuel Macron has written an article detailing his “road map to European renewal” after Britain’s vote to leave the EU, which he believes is a danger to the union’s future. The article has been published in 28 newspapers, one for each member state.

President Macron warns of perceptions of the EU as a “soulless market” that does not represent their interest. "Never, since the Second World War, has Europe been so essential,” he wrote. "Yet never has Europe been in so much danger.

His article states that the UK's leave vote symbolised a crisis in which the EU was failing to respond to "its peoples' needs for protection from the major shocks of the modern world". "We are at a pivotal moment for our continent, a moment when together we need to politically and culturally reinvent the shape of our civilisation in a changing world. Now is the time for a European renaissance."

He said the EU needs to "drive forward a project of convergence rather than competition." Adding, "Europe, where social security was created, needs to introduce a social shield for all workers, guaranteeing the same pay for the same work, and an EU minimum wage, appropriate to each country, negotiated collectively every year."

President Macron concluded that the UK will "find its true place" after Brexit. "In this Europe, the UK, I am sure, will find its true place. The Brexit impasse is a lesson for us all," he said. "We need to escape this trap and make the forthcoming elections [of the European Parliament] and our project meaningful."
