France to trial social media monitoring of taxpayers

France to trial social media monitoring of taxpayers

France's tax office will “experiment” next year with monitoring taxpayers' social media accounts in an effort to combat fraud.

Minister of Public Action and Accounts Gerald Darmanin made the comments to national TV channel M6, according to Euronews. He suggested that public social media could be monitored for signs that might point to tax fraud, for example, “signs of a standard of living inadequate with reported income”.

The tax office might “notice if you have your photo taken many times with a luxury car when you can't afford one”, said Darmanin told Le Figaro

He said the trial would probably start in early 2019, at the same time as the creation of a new national 'tax police force'. France’s income tax system will also shift to a Pay As You Earn scheme from January.
