India's Income Tax Department has suspended one of its deputy commissioners for harassing a taxpayer and allegedly demanding “illegal gratification”.

According to India Today, serious allegations have been made against DK Meena, Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax in the Gujarat region, for harassing a taxpayer in a scrutiny case.

The officer was alleged to have demanded “illegal gratification” via the taxpayer's accountant in return for a favourable assessment. Audio recordings of conversations are said to specify the bribe being demanded for settling the case. When case records were requisitioned, officers also found serious lapses and irregularities in the way the case was conducted.

The finance ministry said the officer had now been suspended and the investigation continues.
