[Ireland] Workers owed €3.4 billion as Revenue admits PAYE overcharge
19 Mar 2019

Workers are advised to check their payslips after Revenue Commissioners acknowledged a €3.4billion PAYE overcharge on taxpayers dating back to 2010, The Irish Sun reports.

The massive overcharge was uncovered by TD Michael McGrath - Fianna Fail’s finance spokesman - after questions were raised in the Dáil.

The Revenue Commissioners have returned an average of
€700 for each taxpayer who made a successful claim. Mr McGrath believes that figure may increase as further appeals are processed.

As many PAYE employees do not challenge their tax, Mr McGrath urges workers to check whether they are due a refund on the income tax they have paid.

He spoke to The Irish Sun to highlight the issue, saying, “What these figures show is that each year over half a million taxpayers have received tax refunds after submitting a claim or following a request for an end of year review known as a P21 balancing statement.”

“However, I suspect there are many more taxpayers out there who are entitled to refunds but who have not claimed them. Tax-payers should check their payslip. For many people who may be struggling to pay their bills, this could represent a significant refund."
