UAE (International Investment) - The only requirement for UAE expats to sponsor family members will now be an income adequate to support them, International Investment reports.
The UAE cabinet announced the new policy and issued a statement explaining the drive behind it, "The decision aims at enhancing family stability of foreign workers and social cohesion, as well as attracting highly skilled workers while maintaining a healthy balance between professional and personal life."
Under the rule previously in place, a list of approved professions was in place for men employed in the UAE hoping to sponsor an immediate family member. Domestic helpers and workers in other specific categories were not eligible, regardless of income. A man in an approved profession had to earn Dh4,000 per month or Dh3,000 plus company accommodation.
A woman, living in the UAE, could sponsor family if she worked as an engineer, teacher or health professional and made a minimum of Dh4,000 per month. Special approval from the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs and a minimum monthly salary of Dh10,000 were required for women working in any other category.
The restrictions on approved professions have now been lifted but as yet there have been no announcements about the salary threshold.
The statement reportedly said that the decision of the UAE cabinet called on relevant government entities to conduct studies to assess and enhance the services provided to residents, including aspects of education and health, and encourage the active participation of their family member in the job market as an alternative to recruiting new workers from abroad, within the existing policies and regulations.
