A university payroll officer has admitted stabbing his boss to death in her own home.

Jill Howell, 46, managed the payroll department at the University of Brighton. She was found lying dead at her home in Brighton last October, having suffered multiple stab wounds in a frenzied attack.

According to the Daily Mail, David Browning, 51, has admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility but denies murder. He allegedly handed himself in to police just minutes after the attack.

Appearing at Lewes Crown Court via video link, Browning, of Willow Drive, Seaford, East Sussex, will go on trial charged with murder next month. He is also accused of being in possession of a lock knife at the time of his arrest, although he did not enter a plea on that charge.

Browning had worked in the finance department since 1989, while Howell joined the University of Brighton’s finance department as his manager in 2015. The university confirmed the pair had worked together and their professional relationship to each other.

A university spokesman said: "Jill was a much-loved and highly-respected colleague. She will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with her family and friends."
