The Global Payroll Association is aware that there are many tax agents and advisors that deal with HMRC on behalf of clients for one or any of the following:
- Self-Assessment
- Corporation Tax
- PAYE (including the Construction Industry Scheme)
- VAT
- VAT (EU Refunds)
- VAT (EC Sales List and Reverse Charge Sales List)
An agent will need to register with HMRC either using the online service through the government gateway or via the paper forms (the 64-8 and FBI 2). The preferred method of dealing with HMRC is always online and this is the way that most agents choose to work.
But some agents prefer to call the “Agent Dedicated Line” on 0300 200 3311 once they are fully authorised to act on a client’s behalf. On the 29th of January 2019, HMRC updated their agent guidance to make clearer the changes that can be made by phone.
Note that there are some changes that must be made in writing to the Central Agent Authorisation Team and the updated guidance makes this clear as well.
