New ACAS Guidance on Age Discrimination

New ACAS Guidance on Age Discrimination
11 Feb 2019

The Equality Act 2010 replaced the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006 in Great Britain.  Age discrimination is one of the nine “protected characteristics” in the act which in total are:

  1. Age
  2. Disability
  3. Gender reassignment
  4. Marriage and civil partnership
  5. Pregnancy and maternity
  6. Race
  7. Religion or belief
  8. Sex
  9. Sexual orientation

The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) updated their website at the start of February 2019 with new guidance in light of the fact that “ageism” is one of the most common forms of unfair treatment at work.

As a result of the updated guidance, the Global Payroll Association would like to point professionals to the links and pdf documents that are on the ACAS website:

  • Overview of age discrimination
  • Key areas where age discrimination may happen
  • Risks of stereotyping people because of age
  • Risks of using ageist language
  • When different treatment because of age may be allowed
  • Making a claim for age discrimination
  • Protected characteristics (video)
  • Age discrimination key points (pdf)
  • Age discrimination 10 obligations for employers (pdf)
  • Age discrimination top 10 myths (pdf)
