With Prime Minister Johnson’s government reshuffle still taking shape, it is with some relief that it was confirmed on the 26th of July that Guy Opperman is to remain as Minister for Pensions – actually, parliamentary under-secretary of state for pensions and financial inclusion.
Mr Opperman has been in the position since the 14th of June 2017 and his role has the following responsibilities:
- Pensioner benefits, including new State Pension, Winter Fuel Payments and Pension Credit
- Private and occupational pensions, including regulatory powers and the National Employment Savings Trust (NEST)
- Automatic enrolment into a workplace pension
- Oversight of arms-length bodies, including the Pensions Regulator, Pension Protection Fund, Financial Assistance Scheme and Pensions Ombudsman
- Financial guidance, including the Single Financial Guidance Body, Financial Inclusion Policy Forum and Post Office Card Accounts
In a department that is so important for UK payroll professionals, stability and continuity are vital and we have that at the Department for Work and Pensions which remains headed by Amber Rudd (Secretary of State) with Mr Opperman in pensions.
