[Jordan] Unemployment rate at highest among graduates

An expert on labour issues has revealed that the majority of Jordan’s unemployed citizens are university graduates. And 80 per cent of those graduates are women, Roya News reports.

Haitham Al-Khasawneh told Roya that cultural pressures imposed by the local society prevents Jordanians from working in certain professions and sectors.

According to Khasawneh, there was not a high number of expatriate workers applying for work permits as a result of the high fees and strict procedures imposed by the Ministry of Labor.

He reportedly said that there is a significant number of expatriate workers who did not obtain work permits and, therefore, work "illegally" in the Kingdom.

Khasawneh said that local labour is concentrated in a number of sectors, such as the tourism sector while expatriate workers are concentrated in others. He added that, with suitable training and qualifications, local workers can replace expatriate workers in these sectors.

The high concentration of expatriate workers in certain sectors is due to the requirement for long working hours, a lack of vacation days and low wages, the expert said.
