Qatar’s Minister of Labour Dr Ali bin Saeed bin Smaikh al-Marri has announced that combating trafficking in persons and the provision of essential protections for labourers are considered priorities in the emirate, Gulf Times reports.
The minister said that progress over the past year includes a series of updates in the business environment and the development of regulations with the objective of improving the situations of expatriate workers.

The remarks were made during the inauguration of the Qatari House for Human Care, after its rehabilitation. The Minister said that the reopening of the facility was a result of cooperation and integration with various authorities concerned in the provision of protection to workers. He said that it is essential to continue efforts to afford required assistance and protection to victims of human trafficking and to work to rehabilitate and integrate them into the community.
The reopening of the House for Human Care was attended by the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), Maryam bint Abdullah al-Attiyah.
The Secretary-General of Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS), Ali bin Hassan al-Hammadi, reportedly said that the cooperation between the Ministry of Labour and QRCS reflects the ministry's priority, including its keenness to capitalise on QRCS's experience in providing social services to various primary segments eligible for receiving care.
The House for Human Care of the ministry, represented by the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking (NCCHT), aims to provide assistance and protection for victims of human trafficking.
