[UK] HMRC Appoints Interim CEO
10 Oct 2019

In July, we reported that Jon Thompson had resigned from HMRC to take on the role as Chief Executive of the Financial Reporting Council (FRC).  His actual date of departure was the 30th of September 2019.  At the time of the announcement, HMRC said the recruitment process for a successor would begin and named “in due course”.  The press release also said that Jim Harra, Deputy Chief Executive and Second Permanent Secretary at HMRC, continued to be the department’s lead for exiting the EU.

On the 1st of October 2019, HMRC announced that they had appointed Mr Harra as Interim Chief Executive and also Interim Accounting Officer.  The announcement came on the same day as they released their updated “single departmental plan” containing the objectives of how they will meet their objectives of:

  • Collecting tax revenue whilst cracking down on avoidance and error
  • “Transforming” tax and the way that it is paid and
  • Designing and delivering an organisation that is “professional, efficient and engaged”
